The Art of Pitching From The Fairway

The majority of golfers are only concerned with improving their distance off the tee and controlling their driver. So they go to the range and practice their drives and nothing else. The truth is that the majority of shots in a round of golf are from under 100 yards from the pin so they should be practicing more their short game. You can in reality lower your score by perfecting your pitching than you could by lengthening your drives by several yards.

Learning the art of pitching can lower your score. With a good pitch you can turn 3 strokes into 2 by pitching near to the flag. Learning to pitch correctly from the fairway is fundamental to improving your golf game but it requires good distance control which is difficult to achieve, even for a Golf Swing Guru!

Pitching Sequence

To accomplish a great pitch shot you should place the ball in the middle of your stance as you want to get under the ball and put it up in the air. Stand with your feet closer together, with an open stance, and place more weight on your lead foot. Aim the clubface at the target and ensure you hit the ball with a perfectly square club face. The length of your backswing will establish the distance the ball will travel - it might be waist height, shoulder height or a full swing. Hit the ball with a crisp, downward blow to ensure ball then turf contact.

Although you feet are in an open position, aim the clubface at the target, just as if your feet were parallel. By opening your stance you are decreasing your backswing; also, you can choke down on the grip which will also reduce your backswing but it will give you more control. Release the club head openly through impact and then move smoothly into your follow through.

Select One Club to Use for Pitching

Many golfers make the mistake of using too many different clubs for different distances. For shots up to 100 yards you could efficiently use a full sand wedge, pitching wedge, or you could even use a 7, 8, or 9 iron by controlling your backswing. But there's no need to complicate matters; the best strategy is to choose a distance that you are confident with and one club that you can constantly use to reach that distance.

For example, let's say that you're great at hitting the ball 90 yards with an 9 iron and using a shoulder length backswing. The idea is that you use this distance as your pitching zone. On a par 4, if you hit a bad drive you need to hit the ball out onto the fairway so that your ball finishes in your pitching zone. If you have practiced sufficiently you will be able to get the ball close enough to the flag to give yourself an opportunity of a par. A similar thing can happen on a par 5; instead of going for the green in 2two which is a hard shot, you should hit a smaller club to your pitching zone which still gives you a putt for birdie.

Practice your Pitching Distances

Naturally, there will be lots of times that you will have an approach shot of anywhere between 35 and 95 yards. In these situations you will have to learn your pitching distances. Yet again, it is a good idea to choose one club that you can master and regulate the length of your backswing for every distance. You will need to practice this lots of times until you can judge the distances time after time. Pitching and chipping are more about finesse and control but it is extremely important because you can lower your score a great deal with a good short game.
